Complex and Relational Trauma Therapy in New Jersey and Texas

A single, calming metaphorical illustration of a safe sanctuary: a healing tree bridging New Jersey and Texas for complex trauma recovery.

Complex trauma usually happens when you’ve been through repeated stress that lasts a long time. This often occurs in relationships where you didn’t have the power to leave or protect yourself. These experiences can happen with a caregiver, a family member, or even a romantic partner. Specifically, it often stems from relationships that were manipulative or left you feeling like you were constantly ‘walking on eggshells.’

Unlike a single scary event, this kind of trauma lives in the “background” of your life. It might look like:

  • A Loud Inner Critic: Feeling like you are “never enough” or that something is fundamentally wrong with you.
  • Feeling Out of Control: Finding it hard to calm down when you’re stressed, or feeling “numb” and shut down.
  • Always on Guard: Waiting for the “other shoe to drop” or constantly checking to see if people are about to reject you.

Our Approach: Healing the Body and Mind

Talking helps. However, because trauma is stored deep in your body and your nervous system, words alone aren’t always enough to make the pain go away. Furthermore, just ‘talking through’ a trauma can sometimes make you feel worse or re-triggered if your body doesn’t feel safe first. Because of this, our approach focuses on helping you find stability before we dive into the heavy pieces of your story.

Because of this, our team uses methods that help your brain and body work together:

Learning to Feel Calm: We teach you how to read your body’s signals. By understanding your “Window of Tolerance,” you can learn how to feel joy and peace without feeling like it’s “too much.”

EMDR Therapy: This is a powerful tool that helps your brain “file away” old, painful memories so they don’t feel so overwhelming today. In doing so, the memory stops feeling like a current threat and starts feeling like a quiet part of your history.

Connecting with Your “Parts”: We help you get to know the different parts of yourself—the part that’s scared, the part that’s angry, and the part that tries to please everyone. By listening to them, you can start to trust yourself again.
